BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The DePaul softball team won two games on Saturday against UAB, sweeping their first set of conference matches of the season. On Friday, the Blue Demons (16-3, 3-0 C-USA) defeated the Blazers 8-1, and on Saturday they were victorious with scores of 4-1 and 2-1.
In game one on Saturday, Christina Douglas gave an almost identical performance to her twin sister Sarah, who hit a three-run homer, the night before. In the fourth inning, with two runners on, Christina Douglas hit a two-run homer to give the Blue Demons the lead they needed to win 4-1.
Lindsay Chouinard picked up the win and allowed just one earned run off of six hits.
The second game would be a little more nerve racking for DePaul. The Blue Demons were down 0-1 and the end of the game was fast approaching. Christina Douglas came through again and nailed a two-run double in the fifth inning to win the game.
Sarah Martz pitched the win and batted 5-for-9 over the weekend.
Strong Start
The Blue Demons have certainly set the pace for the pursuit of the conference title. Their opening conference record of 3-0 surpasses that of last year’s record of 2-1.
“It’s tough to open up conference,” said Eugene Lenti, “and [UAB] was up to the challenge and so were we.”
“Offense carried us through the first two games and the pitching, defense and timely runs took over in the third game.”
“We were strong willed and had a great weekend. This should keep us in position to defend our title.”
