FRESNO, Calif. – The Blue Demons (8-2) collected its second win of the Hedrick’s Hallowell Chevrolet Classic as they beat Cal Poly in a 6-5 decision. The score was close despite DePaul out-hitting their opponent 12-4.
Action started early in the game on Friday for both DePaul and the Mustangs. In the top of the first inning, Cal Poly scored five runs. With the bases loaded and two outs, Chelsea Green scored on a wild pitch by Sarah Martz. A walk loaded the bases again and Martz hit Amy Jo Nazarenus to walk in a run for the Mustangs. A triple from Carrie Schubert sent in three more of BYU’s runners before a ground out by Kaitlyn ended the inning.
DePaul answered back with a four-run inning in second half of the first. Lindsay Chouinard reached first base on a fielder’s choice and sent home Liz Bouck who had singled and stole second, then advanced to third on a sacrifice fly. Saskia Roberson, who had homered in their game against BYU earlier on Friday, doubled to center field and collected two RBIs. Before the inning ended Gina Ramacci added an RBI when Roberson scored off of her single.
In the bottom of the second, the Blue Demons claimed the lead largely in part to a triple hit by Martz followed by a Katy Kukman double. Two runs put the Blue Demons up at 6-4.
Solid defense kept both teams from scoring again, and the Blue Demons claimed victory.
Liz Bouck hit 3-for-4 and Sarah Martz hit 3-for-3 for DePaul. Martz (4-0) picked up the win while Chouinard chalked up a save.
The Blue Demons continue play in the tournament Saturday against host Fresno State (3 p.m.) and St. John's (5 p.m.).
