CHICAGO – The No. 10 Blue Demons (23-4, 10-1 C-USA) opened up their home season with two wins on Saturday against Southern Miss. They beat the Golden Eagles with ease 2-0 and 11-0 with the help of four home runs totaled in the double header.
In game one, the first run came in the bottom of the fourth when a sacrifice bunt from Katy Kukman scored Sarah Martz, who had singled and advanced to third on a single from Saskia Roberson and on a sacrifice bunt from Sarah Douglas.
The second run was scored in the next inning when Christina Douglas hit a home run over the fence in right field. It gave DePaul a 2-0 lead that they would keep with the help of Lindsay Chouinard’s pitching.
Chouinard (15-3) retired 12 batters in seven innings and walked just two for the shut out.

The second game was a hitting frenzy for DePaul, especially in the second and third innings.
The Demons were already up one run from a homer from Roberson crushed over left field in the first inning. Then in the second inning, they totaled four hits including a double from Roberson to give them five runs and a 6-0 lead.
The bats were even hotter in the third inning when the Demons hit two more over the fence. Martz and Kukman each crushed a home run, adding to the total of six hits that inning to give DePaul five more runs and to put the slaughter rule into affect.
The Demons ended up winning 11-0 after holding off the Golden Eagles in the top of the fifth. Sarah Martz (8-1) grabbed the win with five strikeouts in five innings and pitched a one-hitter.
