CHICAGO – The DePaul women’s basketball program will be represented in Houston and Los Angles during the 2003 WNBA season. Latasha Byears and the Los Angeles Sparks aim for their third straight league title while Mfon Udoka returns to the WNBA with the Houston Comets.
Byears, a former All-American with the Blue Demons, enters her seventh WNBA season and third with the Sparks. Last season, she ranked in the league’s top 10 in rebounding and field goal percentage. Her 24.5 career scoring average at DePaul still stands at the top of the school’s career chart.
Udoka is projected to open the season in the Comets starting line-up after signing as a free agent prior to training camp. This season is her second in the league as she played briefly with the Detroit Shock in 1998. The 6-0 forward finished her DePaul career among the all-time leaders in scoring, rebounding and field goal percentage.
Former DePaul standout Lenae Williams was waived by the Phoenix Mercury on the final day of training camp. She was drafted and played last season in 27 games for the Detroit Shock. Prior to this season’s draft, the guard was traded to Phoenix.
