Five Softball Players Receive Conference USA Honors

CHICAGO - Five DePaul softball players were named to the Conference USA post season award lists announced by the league office today. Sarah Martz and Saskia Roberson were named to the first team, Christina Douglas and Linda Secka were named to the second team and Jessica Evans and Linda Secka were named to the All-Freshman Team.
Martz, a senior, was named to the first team as a utility player, splitting her time between pitching and the outfield. On the mound, Martz registered a 2.14 ERA and struck out 182 batters. She pitched 31 complete games and shutout six different opponents. At the plate, Martz is batting .384 and leads the team in hits and runs. She has been named to the first team in each of her four seasons at DePaul.
Roberson, DePaul's first baseman, was named to the first team fielding due to her proficiency and power at the plate. She is batting .401, and leads the Blue Demons with 16 doubles, 10 home runs, 42 RBI, and a .991 fielding percentage. Roberson was named to the first team as a sophomore and named to the All-Freshman, in 2001.
This is Christina Douglas' first time on the postseason award list. Douglas, DePaul's second baseman, took over the position in early April after playing catcher and in the outfield. She has blasted eight home runs and is batting .344 on the season.
Freshman Linda Secka was named second team all-conference and to the All-Freshman team for her performance in center field. Jessica Evans was also named to the All-Freshman roster as an infielder. Both Secka and Evans are batting over .300.
Auriel Jenkins of Southern Miss, who led her team in earning the regular season crown and a 19 4 league mark, was named Conference USA Most Valuable Player for the 2004 season. Jenkins' head coach, Gay McNutt, claimed Coach of the Year honors for guiding the Golden Eagles throughout the 2004 season and seeing them to a 32-22 overall record. The Pitcher of the Year award went to Leigh Ann Ellis of USF who has recorded 39 wins and boasts a 0.73 ERA to lead the league. Audrey Rendon of Louisville earned the title Freshman of the Year for a standout rookie season that helped the Cardinals to a program best 40-15 overall mark. The award winners and all league teams were chosen by C-USA's nine head coaches.
