Blue Demons Knock Off UAB

CHICAGO – For the third straight game the No. 17 DePaul women’s basketball team put five players in double-figures and used it for an 85-52 win over visiting UAB on Friday night. The victory was the 19th in-a-row at home for DePaul as they look to tie the school record of 20 on Sunday against USF.
UAB (5-15, 2-5 C-USA) hung around early and took a 13-12 lead on a three-pointer by Crystal McFadden with just over 12 minutes left in the first half. Allie Quigley matched McFadden’s three on DePaul’s next possession only to see the Blazers tie the game again at 15-15.
Four minutes later Carmen Guzman pulled UAB to within six points at 29-23 before the Blue Demons went on a 16-4 run to finish the first half. Seven different players scored during the run for DePaul (16-3, 5-1 C-USA).
The Blue Demons didn’t miss a beat to start the second half as the scored nine of the first 12 points of the second period. Quigley’s lay-up with just over 12 minutes left in the game put DePaul up 30 at 63-33.
The DePaul lead was never less than 24 points in the second half and grew to as many as 34 on an Erin Carney free throw with 1:16 left in the game.
Caprice Smith turned in her best game this season with a team-high 19 points. She added seven rebounds while Khara Smith posted her 14th double-double of the season with 16 points and 14 rebounds. Carney finished with 12 points and five boards while Rubino and Dant chipped in 11 points each.
DePaul hosts USF on Sunday afternoon at the DePaul Athletic Center. A win would match the program’s longest home floor winning streak at 20 games. Tipoff is set for 2 p.m. and the game will be televised live on FSN Chicago.
