ROSEMONT,
The win evened DePaul’s record at 2-2 while the Bluejays dropped their first game of the season after opening with three victories.
“I am very proud of the kids,” DePaul head coach Jerry Wainwright said. “With just one day to prepare we came out and executed our game plan well. We did have some turnovers but they didn’t lead to Creighton points and that was a key, especially early in the game. I’ll take a 10-second call over a bad pass because it doesn’t lead directly to points and it lets you set your defense.
“This was a nice win because Creighton does such an outstanding job and our young guys are starting to feel more comfortable,” Wainwright said. “Wesley Green, Lorenzo Thompson and Cliff Clinkscales all came off the bench and did a great job for us.”
DePaul, which led 25-23 at the half, outscored Creighton 7-0 to start the second half. Jabari Currie hit a 3-pointer and had a layup to give the Blue Demons a 32-23 lead. Leading 36-32 midway through the second half, DePaul extended their lead on a 11-0 run.
Creighton entered the game hitting 24-of-48 of their 3-pointer attempts, but was just 5-for-29 Wednesday.
Nate Funk, who scored a career-high 38 points for Creighton against
Karron Clarke added 10 points for DePaul.
Both teams struggled offensively in the first half, DePaul had 13 turnovers and Creighton shot 32 percent.
The Blue Demons return to action on Saturday when Bucknell comes to the Allstate Arena for a 1 p.m. contest on WSCR (670 AM).
