NORFOLK, Va. – It was a day where nothing went right for DePaul.
The Blue Demons shot 24.1-percent from the field and were a frigid 3-21 (.143) from three-point range and those low numbers added up to DePaul’s worst defeat of the season, an 87-43 loss to Old Dominion on Saturday at the Ted Constant Convocation Center.
The loss dropped DePaul to 5-4 while Old Dominion moved to 7-2.
DePaul had no players in double figures and were led by Draelon Burns’ eight points. Karron Clarke and Marcus Heard each added seven points. Heard, Lorenzo Thompson and Marlon Brumfield all had five rebounds to pace the Blue Demons on the glass.
The Blue Demons had just seven assists and suffered 16 turnovers.
Old Dominion was led by Arnaud Dahi and Isaiah Hunter who each had 18 points as the Monarch were a blistering 22-33 (.667) from the field in the second half.
The game was tight for much of the first half despite DePaul shooting 8-for-30 from the field. ODU was able to move the lead to 10 at 24-14 with 4:19 left but DePaul clawed back to cut the lead to just three at 25-22 with 1:06 left but a quick 4-0 run in the final 39 seconds gave the Monarchs at 29-22 halftime advantage.
It was all Old Dominion after intermission.
DePaul got as close as four points at 30-26 with 17:22 to play but ODU then went on a 28-6 run over the next six plus minutes and it was over from there. The lead continued to grow for the rest of the contest and the final margin of victory (43) was the biggest advantage of the game. The Blue Demons were just 6-28 (.214) from the floor in the second half.
The Blue Demons will conclude this current four-game road swing with a visit to Oakland, California on Wednesday as they face California in the second game of the Pete Newell Challenge at The Arena. Game time is 10 p.m. (CST) and the contest will be televised by College Sports Television and broadcast on Sirius Satellite Radio.
Notes: DePaul announced prior to the game that sophomore center Wesley Green will be out indefinitely with a foot injury.
