Softball Splits with Notre Dame

CHICAGO- The DePaul softball team spilt a pair of games with future BIG EAST opponent Notre Dame, Tuesday afternoon at Wish Field. The Blue Demons lost the first game in the eighth inning 2-1 but won the second game 7-4. DePaul improves to 28-13 overall, while Notre Dame improves to 30-9 on the season.
The first game of the doubleheader proved to be a pitching dual between DePaul’s, Megan Huitink and Notre Dame’s Steffa Stenglein. Stenglein ultimately won the battle, striking out 14 Blue Demons and gave up three hits. Huitink gave up just five hits and struck out five Irish batters.
The Irish got on the board first, scoring in the fourth inning on a Katie Laing double to right center.
DePaul senior All-American Saskia Roberson answered the Irish run with one swing of the bat. Roberson sent her 47th career home run over the center field fence to tie the ball game.
The Blue Demons loaded the bases in the fifth inning, but were unable to capitalize. DePaul left nine runners stranded in game-one.
Notre Dame plated the winning run on a Kellie Middleton single to right field in the eighth inning.
The Irish won game-one, 2-1.
The Blue Demon bats heated up in the second game, recording seven runs on nine hits.
The ballgame was scoreless after two innings of play, but Notre Dame added two runs on three hits and a DePaul error in the top of the third inning to take a 2-0 lead.
The Blue Demons looked to have their backs against the wall with two-outs in bottom of the third when senior right fielder Dana Kenney came to the plate. Kenney doubled to straight away center and scored on junior Sara Bandauski’s double to left field. Roberson was intentionally walked before sophomore Jessica Evans came to the plate. Evans sent her fourth home run of the season over the left center wall to give the Blue Demons a 4-0 lead.
DePaul added a single run in the fourth on sophomore Kate Sheaks’ RBI single.
Sophomore Linda Secka and freshman Marcy Wilus were both credited with RBI in the fifth inning.
The Irish mounted a come back in the sixth inning, scoring two-runs on one hit and a DePaul error, but the run differential was too much. The Blue Demons won game-two 7-4.
DePaul pitcher Tracie Adix (16-4) recorded the win, while Heather Booth (14-5) recorded the loss for Notre Dame.
