Softball Wins Two at UNLV Invitational

Shea Warren and Kate Sheaks each registered three-hits on the day for DePaul (9-5).
The DePaul and UNLV softball teams took a scoreless game into the international tie breaker in the eighth inning before finishing the game in the 11th with the Blue Demons winning, 8-6. Sandy Vojik scored the game's first run on a fielders choice in the ninth inning before Sheaks blasted a three-run home to give the Blue Demons a 4-0 advantage. Sheaks' home run was her second of the season.
The Rebels (12-8) matched DePaul's output in the bottom of the inning as they strung together four-runs on three hits to force a 10th frame.
The Blue Demons added two-runs in the 10th only to have the Rebels do the same. Marcy Wilus knocked an RBI-single with one out in the 10th and the Blue Demons added another run on a Rebel error to give them a 6-4 lead. UNLV followed suit as Bri Bernardi connected on a two-run home run to tie the game and send it to the 11th frame.
Amber Patton was credited with DePaul's final two-RBI when she sent a shot to centerfield that scored Sheaks and Warren.
Tracie Adix threw season-high nine innings before being replaced by Megan Huitink (3-1) in the 10th. The duo struck out eight batters and scattered 10 hits.
UNLV starter Christie Robinson's had a no-hitter going until Patton connected on a bunt single in the bottom of the sixth. Robinson threw 8.1 innings, allowing four hits and four runs, but only two were earned. Slettvet (3-3) registered the loss and threw the final 1.2 innings.
In the nightcap, DePaul starter Becca Heteniak (2-2) struck out a season-high 13 batters on her way to her second complete game of the season.
The Blue Demons needed only two innings to score their five runs. With two outs,
DePaul's bats came alive in the sixth, registering four runs on three hits. Heteniak drew a walk before Sheaks and Secka knocked back-to-back doubles. Sandy Vojik's RBI-single plated the Blue Demons final run of the day.
Heteniak had a no-hitter going into the top of the seventh, but gave up two hits for two runs.
Brooks (4-6) gave up four hits while striking out five.
The Blue Demons return to the diamond Saturday, tangling with No. 18/18 California at 11 a.m. (CST) and No. 23 Nebraska at 1:15 p.m.
