Sheaks Lifts Blue Demons Past Loyola-Chicago

CHICAGO - Senior left fielder Kate Sheaks blasted a walkoff home run in the ninth inning to give the No. 19/14 DePaul softball team a 3-2 victory over cross-town rival Loyola-Chicago on Tuesday at Cacciatore Stadium. With the win the Blue Demons stretch their winning streak to nine games and improve to 25-7 on the season. Loyola falls to 9-13.
DePaul first baseman Marcy Wilus went 3-for-4 on the afternoon and was credited with two RBI. Wilus knocked in the first run in the second inning on an infield single with two outs. Wilus then registered her second RBI on the day in the fourth inning, smashing her team-best, fifth double to right center.
Following a two-out error, Loyola's Kat Krause tied the game with a two-run home run over the right-center field fence in the bottom of the sixth.
The score stayed knotted at two before Sheaks connected on her fifth home run of the season. Sheaks went 2-for-4 on the day, knocking a home run and a single to extend her hitting streak to 11 games.
Tracie Adix got the start for the Blue Demons and threw the first eight innings before being replaced in the ninth by Becca Heteniak (10-3), who earned the win. Adix finished with eight strikeouts and gave up two hits, while Heteniak struck out one and gave-up no hits.
Loyola also used a pair of pitchers - Krista Crosson and Amy Solava. Crosson, got the start and threw three and a third innings before being replaced by Solava (5-7), who suffered the loss. The duo struck out seven and scattered nine hits.
The Blue Demons return to action on Thursday with Notre Dame visiting Cacciatore Stadium for a BIG EAST doubleheader. The first pitch is slated for 3 p.m.
