Heteniak Leads Blue Demons Past UCSB

COLUMBUS, Ga. Becca Heteniak threw her third shut out of the season as the No. 19/19 DePaul softball team topped UC Santa Barbara 2-0, Sunday at the NFCA Leadoff Classic at the South Commons Softball Complex. The Blue Demons improve to 11-5, while the Gauchos fall to 9-10 on the season.
Heteniak (6-3) got into a rhythm early as she retired UCSB’s first seven batters, including striking six of those seven. The Gauchos number eight hitter Priscilla Perez halted Heteniak’s streak with a base knock in the bottom of the third with one out Heteniak allowed just three hits and finished the game with seven Ks in her third shutout of the season.
Heteniak helped her own cause by leading off the Blue Demon second with a full count single to left field. Brittney Yniguez and Alex Morocco followed with base knocks to load the bases for pinch hitter Simone Ashkar. Ashkar looped a two-RBI single to right field to give the Blue Demons a 2-0 lead heading into the bottom half of the inning.
DePaul only needed two runs in the win, but the offense recorded seven hits with Yniguez and Heteniak each registering a pair.
Melinda Matsumoto (1-6) took to the loss, she struck out three and walked zero.
The Blue Demons close out the NFCA Leadoff Classic with a 11:30 p.m. (CST) game with Georgia Tech.
