No. 14/18 DePaul Tops No. 18/19 Washington

FULLERTON, Calif. For only the second time in 12 tries, in 13 years, the No. 14/18 DePaul softball team defeated No 18/19 Washington, 2-1 Saturday at the Judi Garman Classic at the Anderson Family Field. With the win, the Blue Demons improve to 19-9 on the season, while the Huskies fall to 20-9-1.
The Blue Demons scored the first run of the ballgame in the top of the second, when Annie Demas singled to right field. With Sarah Shizas running for Becca Heteniak, who walked to begin the inning, Shizas scored from second as Demas’ ball bounced into right field.
DePaul added to its lead in the sixth when Marcy Wilus was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. The Blue Demons would leave the bases juiced with a 2-0 lead heading into the top of the seventh.
The Huskies answered in seventh with a run on Bailey Stenson RBI single to right field. Washington would leave two runners stranded in scoring position as DePaul starter Becca Heteniak got the final batter to fly out to left field.
Vojik’s tallied two of DePaul’s four hits on the afternoon.
Heteniak (9-5) threw the complete game for the win. She scattered three hits, walked six, and fanned six batters.
Aleah Macon (9-4) threw five innings before being replace by Caitlin Nobel in the sixth with the bases loaded. Macon gave up two run, four hits and struck out five. Nobel retired all three batters she faces.
Satuday’s win avenges the Blue Demons 3-1 loss to the Huskies at the Women’s College World Series in 2007. The win also halts Washington’s six-game series winning streak.
The Blue Demons begin the home portion of their schedule on Tuesday, March 25 when Illinois State visits Cacciatore Stadium for a 2 p.m. contest.
