CHICAGO -- Becca Heteniak led the No. 23 DePaul softball team past Connecticut 4-1, Saturday in BIG EAST Conference action at Cacciatore Stadium. The Blue Demons have won their last six games and improve to 37-14 and 10-5 in league play, while the Huskies fall to 25-18 and 11-4 in conference action.
After Heteniak struck out the side in the top of the first, the Blue Demon offense went to work and scored three runs on three hits. Amber Patton led off with an infield single and scored on Sandy Vojik’s RBI shot to left center. Heteniak followed and helped her own cause with a double off the left centerfield fence. Up 2-0, the Blue Demons final run came on a double steal.
Connecticut’s only run of the ballgame came in the third inning when Jillian Ortega knocked an RBI single to centerfield.
With their lead down to three runs, the Blue Demons got back to work in the bottom half of the frame. Heteniak smashed her second double of the afternoon with two-outs to spark the offense. Jackie Tarulli-Fisher followed and sent a high-fly pop up to shortstop, and with sun and wind playing a factor, the ball dropped which allowed pinch runner Katie Hanson to score.
Heteniak (22-6) threw a complete game for the Blue Demons and struck out 12, while allowing just three hits and walked a pair. Heteniak is now 6-1 in conference action and averages 9.2 strikeouts per seven innings in league play.
Tricia Sullivan (13-9) took the loss and allowed six hits in her complete game performance. Sullivan struck out five and walked one.
Heteniak and Patton each went 2-for-3 for DePaul.
The Blue Demons and Huskies complete their BIG EAST doubleheader later today.
