QUEENS, NY -- Sandy Vojik led the No. 18/25 DePaul softball team past St. John’s 2-1, Sunday at Red Storm Field. With the win, the Blue Demons improve to 23-12 and 2-3 in BIG EAST Conference play, while the Red Storm slide to 15-22 and 2-7 in league action.
Vojik went 2-for-2 with a home run, a triple and a sacrifice fly.
The Blue Demons used their short game to score the first run of the ballgame. Amber Patton led off the game with a double down the right field line, and moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by Marie Thompson. Vojik followed and lined a sacrifice fly to left field to give the Blue Demons a 1-0 advantage heading into the bottom half of the inning.
Vojik gave the Blue Demons an insurance run with a solo home run over the 10 foot wall in left field to lead-off the fourth frame. Vojik’s home run was her 23rd of her career which is the fifth most in Blue Demon history.
St. John’s got its first runner on the basepath when Danielle Estrada took a five-pitch walk with two outs in the fifth. Blue Demon starter Becca Heteniak would get the final batter to strikeout and end the inning.
Red Storm’s Shauntain Harris gave her team new light with a solo home run. The one-out long ball came in the sixth inning. Harris’ hit ended Heteniak’s no-hitter and was Heteniak’s first earned run in BIG EAST play since April 22, 2007 when Louisville tagged her with four.
St. John’s looked to rally as Roxy Struble and Brandy Reyes both singled with one out in the bottom of the seventh. Heteniak would retired the final two Red Strom batters with her 12th and 13th strike outs of the game.
For the second time this week, Heteniak (12-5) tied a career-high with 13 strikeouts. She walked one in her 13th complete game of the season.
Kat Lawrence (6-10) suffered the loss and scattered hits in her complete game performance. Lawerence struck out a pair and walked two.
The Blue Demons and Red Storm conclude their doubleheader later this afternoon.
