Pittsburgh Takes Game Two

PITTSBURGH Pittsburgh used a five-run sixth inning to propel it to a 7-3, BIG EAST Conference victory over No. 20 DePaul, Sunday at Tress Field. The game was the second between the two teams with each side winning one. Pittsburgh improves to 31-24 and 12-10 in conference play. The Blue Demons slide to 45-16 and finish league play 16-6.
DePaul took a 1-0 lead in the first inning. Amber Patton started the game with a double in the gap in right center and came around to score Becca Heteniak’s RBI single.
Pittsburgh took its first lead of the day on Kelly Stiles two-run home run in the second.
With Lindsey Dean getting the start the circle for game two, DePaul’s the two other pitchers, Lauren Frankiewicz and Heteniak got in the action with solo home runs in fourth inning. Heteniak’s long ball led off the frame and Frankiewicz’s came two batters later. Heteniak and Frankiewicz have combined for nine of the Blue Demons 30 home runs this season.
Pittsburgh took advantage of DePaul’s fielding woes and registered four hits to take the game 7-3. Sam Card, Megan Livesey and Kayla Zinger all registered RBI in the frame.
Zinger (13-11) earned the complete game victory. She allowed 10 hits and struck out four.
Lindsey Dean (8-3) suffered the loss for the Blue Demons. The freshman pitcher scattered six hits, struck out five and walked one. Only three of Pittsburgh’s seven runs were earned.
Patton and Heteniak led the Blue Demons offensively. Each registered a pair of hits in the loss, while Heteniak led DePaul with a two RBI.
DePaul won game one, 4-1.
The Blue Demons wrapped up the No. 2 seed at the BIG EAST Championship, May 8-10 at Louisville’s Ulmer Stadium. DePaul will get an early rematch as it is slated to tangle with No. 7 Pittsburgh on Thursday at 11:30 a.m. (CST) The winner will face either No. 3 Connecticut or No. 6 Syracuse on Friday at 1:30 p.m. The contest will be broadcast live on CBS-College Sports.
