Blue Demons Douse Flames

CHICAGO The DePaul men’s tennis team opened its season 2-0, after defeating cross-town rival UIC 6-1 at the Lakeshore Athletic Center.
Finishing first was Alasdair Graetz and Bartosz Jozwiak in the No. 2 doubles match. After falling behind 3-0, the pair rallied back to defeat Nate Kirk and Danny Wilson 8-5.
In the No. 3 doubles match, Matija Palinic and Juan Xavier Munoz fell to a 1-1 season record, when they lost to Tim O’Brien and Bastian Harbo, 8-4.
With the doubles point still up for grabs, all eyes were on the evenly matched Austin Doerner and Ben Hartman of DePaul, and UIC’s Dave Robare and Sebastian Lystad. After going point-for-point the entire match, the Blue Demons came away with the victory in the tie breaker, and won 9-8.
In singles action, Doerner went up against Harbo in the No. 1 singles match, winning 7-5, 6-2. At No. 2 singles, Hartman cruised past Lystad, 6-2, 6-3. Both players currently hold a team-best winning streak of five.
Graetz earned his eighth win of the 2008-09 season, defeating Wilson in the No. 3 singles match, 6-2, 6-4. With a score of 7-6 (4), 6-4, Jozwiak notched his team-high 10th victory, beating Adriano Liccardo.
Palinic, who dropped his first set 2-6 to Robare, bounced back to win the next two, 6-4, 6-4, for the No. 5 singles match win. Tim Cadet split his first two sets, but eventually bowed out to Kirk, 6-3, 4-6, 6-1.
The Blue Demons return to the courts Jan. 18, when they take on the Boilermakers of Purdue.
