Transfer duo leads Blue Demons to runner-up finish
CHICAGO – DePaul men's tennis standouts Alejandro Gandini and Sebastian Medica were both named unanimous selections to the All-BIG EAST First Team, the conference announced Thursday morning.
Major awards and All-BIG EAST teams were selected by a vote of the league's head coaches, who were not allowed to vote for themselves or their own players.
Both newcomers to the program this season, the transfer duo made an immediate impact in the Blue Demons' lineup. Gandini, a graduate transfer and the 2025 BIG EAST Player of the Year, and Medica, a sophomore transfer and the 2024 Big Sky Freshman of the Year, played key roles in leading DePaul to a BIG EAST Championship runner-up finish.
Gandini earns All-BIG EAST honors for the fourth time in his career, closing one of the most decorated careers in league history. The graduate student competed primarily at No. 1 singles, posting a 12-10 dual record, including an 11-10 mark on the top court and a 5-0 record in BIG EAST play. Gandini delivered a moment to remember on Feb. 28, clinching the Blue Demons' win over No. 62 Cal Poly with a 6-3, 6-4 victory at No. 1 singles. The win marked DePaul's first victory over an ITA-ranked opponent since 2015.
Gandini finishes his career as a four-time All-BIG EAST selection, four-time BIG EAST Singles Player of the Week and three-time BIG EAST Doubles Team of the Week honoree. He totaled 50 dual singles wins and 52 doubles victories during his collegiate career. In doubles action this spring, Gandini went 8-6 in dual play and 4-1 against BIG EAST opponents, earning wins across all three doubles courts.
Medica earns his first All-BIG EAST honor after a breakout sophomore campaign. The San Luis Potosi, Mexico native led DePaul with a 15-6 dual singles record and went unbeaten in conference action at 6-0. Medica won matches on every singles court except No. 6, showing extreme versatility throughout the lineup. He went 9-1 across the top three courts, 3-4 at No. 4 and 3-1 at No. 5. He closed the season on an 8-1 singles run, helping DePaul reach the BIG EAST Championship final. Medica also contributed in doubles play, posting a 10-13 dual record, including an 8-7 mark at No. 2 doubles and a 3-3 record against BIG EAST opponents.
