CHICAGO With March Madness just a week away, DePaul head women’s basketball coach Doug Bruno will step away from the basketball court and plunge into Lake Michigan on Sunday, March 1. Bruno will participate in the ninth annual Chicago Polar Plunge that benefits the Chicago Special Olympics. The Plunge is scheduled for 10 a.m. at North Avenue Beach.
Bruno, who has been involved with the Special Olympics as a basketball coach and volunteer since the mid-70’s will take his first plunge into the Lake Michigan in the winter months.
"The concept is simple. When you work with athletes like I do everyday that have been blessed with such physical and mental attributes - it is something that is a gift a gift from God, and those physical and mental attributes should never be taken for granted,” Bruno said. “The Special Olympics takes the Olympics concept and ideals to its most well intended and full inclusion.
The Special Olympics holds a unique place in Bruno’s heart as one of his long-time basketball managers, sister-in-law and God child, Maureen Dillon is a former Special Olympics athletic, who will also take the plunge on Sunday.
The Blue Demons close out the regular season this week, they host USF tonight at McGrath Arena with a 7 p.m. tip and welcome Marquette on Saturday. DePaul’s final regular season game is at Cincinnati on March 2.
