FULLERTON, Calif. The No. 23/20 DePaul softball team suffered a heartbreaking 1-0 loss to New Mexico on Saturday at the Judi Garman Classic at the Anderson Family Softball Complex.
New Mexico (9-12) capitalized on a throwing error to score the only run of the ballgame in the second inning. With a runner on second Jessica Lujan-Dresslar knocked a ball to Blue Demon third baseman Amber Patton. Patton fielded the ball cleanly, but threw it out of the reach of first baseman Jackie Tarulli-Fisher. The error allowed a Lobos runner to score from second base.
The Blue Demons (10-7) had their best chance to score in the fifth inning when Alex Morocco blasted a triple to right center with one out. Patton followed with a bunt single and with runners on first and third, DePaul coach Eugene Lenti called for the double steal. The Lobos read the play and got Patton out at second and Morocco at home to end the frame.
Becca Heteniak (5-4) suffered the loss. She scattered just four hits, while she fanned eight and did not walk a batter.
Danielle Castro (2-3) earned the win; she allowed just four hits while she struck out three and walked three in her complete game performance.
Lynsey Ciezki and Heteniak also had hits for DePaul.
The Blue Demons close out the Judi Garman Classic on Sunday with a noon game with No. 24/21 Fresno State. The game will be played at Mt. San Antonio College in Walnut, Calif.
Following Sunday’s game DePaul opens BIG EAST Conference play on Sat. Mar. 21. The Blue Demons welcome St. John’s for a noon doubleheader at Cacciatore Stadium.
