CHICAGO Sophomore outfielder Sean Plese displayed her speed and power as the No. 20/19 DePaul softball team rallied past Syracuse 5-2 in the second game of a BIG EAST Conference doubleheader Saturday at Cacciatore Stadium.
Syracuse (28-16, 11-7 BIG EAST) jumped on the board in the second inning when Lindsay Wasek knocked a two-run home run over the fence in left field. The runs were the first for the Orange as the Blue Demons won the first game 4-0.
DePaul (34-10, 18-3 BIG EAST) wasted no time and responded in its half of the frame. Tara Voss drew a leadoff walk while Brittney Yniguez singled to left before both runners advanced 60 feet on Alex Morocco’s sacrifice. Batting in the number nine slot, Plese drilled a ball that bounced just inches inside fair territory for her second triple of the season.
With the game knotted at two, Blue Demon starter Becca Heteniak (21-6) retired six of Syracuse’s next seven batters.
Heading into the bottom the fourth with the game still in a deadlock, Plese came through again. With one out the sophomore reached on bunt single and came around to score Lynsey Ciezki’s RBI single up the middle. Senior Jackie Tarulli-Fisher knocked in Ciezki with her 45th RBI of the season.
DePaul capitalized on a Syracuse throwing error in the fifth to plate its final run in the fifth.
Heteniak picked up her second win of the day as she allowed just four Orange hits in game two. The junior struck out six and walked a pair in her 24th complete game.
Brittany Gardner (8-8) suffered the loss, she scattered nine hits while she walked a trio and fanned three.
The Blue Demons break from conference action this week and play at UIC, Northwestern and Valparaiso. DePaul’s Tuesday game at Northwestern is scheduled to begin at 4 p.m.
