CHICAGO Becca Heteniak tied a season-high 12 strikeouts in DePaul’s 4-1 victory over rival UIC on Wednesday at Flames Field on the Southside.
The Blue Demons(35-11), who are ranked No. 19/20 in the two national polls, out hit the Flames 8-3. Amber Patton went 3-for-4 to improve her season average to .522, while Tara Voss added two hits and three RBI to lead DePaul offensively.
Patton started the game with her 10th double of the season. The senior All-American moved to third on Lynsey Ciezki’s sacrifice and scored on a double steal with pinch runner Sarah Shizas.
Voss gave the Blue Demons some breathing room with a two-RBI single to deep left center in the fourth. Voss’ single landed just inside the warning track and scored Heteniak, who reached on a fielder’s choice and Yniguez, who took a full count walk.
UIC (22-23) got a run back in its half of the frame on Melica Macias’ home run to right field. The homer was the first hit for the Flames after Heteniak retired nine of UIC’s first 10 batters.
Voss struck again for the Blue Demons as she perfectly executed the suicide squeeze to give DePaul its final 4-1 advantage in the top of the sixth. Voss’s infield hit scored Heteniak, who led off the frame with a double off the left field wall.
Heteniak (22-6) threw her 25th complete game of the season for the win. Her 12 Ks tied her previous season-high which she set at Providence on April 1.
The Flames used three pitchers, while Sarah Clynes (5-13) suffered the loss. The trio of hurlers struck out five and walked a pair.
The Blue Demons play a single game at Valparaiso on Thursday in Indiana at 4 p.m. The originally scheduled doubleheader was downgraded to a single game earlier today.
