NEWPORT, R.I. - DePaul sophomore Michael Furci finished in a tie for fourth to lead the Blue Demons at the Adams Cup of Newport. The team finished in eighth place out of the 17 teams competing at Newport National GC. Furci's fourth-place finish is the highest for a DePaul golfer since Oct. 2007.
Furci set career bests with his top finish along with his best 18-hole and 54-hole performances in the first event of the 2009-10 season. He opened the tournament with a career-best 70 on Monday morning before following that with a 75 in the second round. His final round on Tuesday saw the Sayville, N.Y. native card an even-par 72. Furci's three-round total of 217 (+1) set a new career mark besting his previous 54-hole record of 220. His finish at the Adams Cup is the highest for a DePaul golfer since Greg Doherty finished in a tie for first at the Georgetown Intercollegiate in Oct. 2007.
Doherty came back on Tuesday with the best third round by a DePaul golfer with a one-under score of 71. He opened the tournament with back-to-back 79's and finished in a group at 41st with Russell Budd. Budd, playing in his first collegiate event, used rounds of 75 and 78 on Monday along with a 76 on Tuesday for his three-round total of 229 (+13).
