CHICAGO - After going to the east coast for the Georgetown Intercollegiate last week, the DePaul men's golf team heads west for the Bill Cullum Invitational this week in Simi Valley, Calif. The event is the final tournament for the Blue Demons in the fall portion of the 2010-11 schedule.
The Bill Cullum Invitational features three rounds over two days on Oct. 25-26 at Wood Ranch Golf Club. Wood Ranch GC is a par-72 layout over 6,796 yards. The first of two Monday rounds starts at 7:45 a.m. PT before the final 18 holes begin at 7 a.m. PT on Tuesday.
Joining host Cal State Northridge for the tournament is Cal Lutheran, Cal State Bakersfield, Cal State Fullerton, Cal State San Bernadino, Cal State San Marcos, DePaul, Portland, Sacramento State, San Jose State, South Dakota State, Southern Utah, UC Riverside Utah State and Utah Valley.
Pacific won last year's tournament with a team score of 843 led by individual champion, Alex Johnson, who posted a tournament total of 207 (66-68-73).
DePaul's lineup for the Bill Cullum Invitational includes Ben Westley, Russell Budd, Maximilian Mayer, Charles Boucher and Erik Peterson.
Noting the Blue Demons: Junior Ben Westley leads the team with a 74.42 scoring average... he is followed by senior Charles Boucher at 76.17 and sophomore Russell Budd with a 76.44 stroke average... Boucher is the lone senior on the roster... six of the nine members of the roster are either freshmen or sophomores... Budd's score of 70 in the first round of the Cardinal Collegiate is the low score of the season... he also held the best round of the season a year ago with a 67 in the first round of the Xavier Invitational... Budd has recorded four career rounds of 70 or better in 13 career events... Budd and Westley each have two top 25 finishes in three tournaments this season.
Fall Review: Cardinal Collegiate (Sept. 20-21) - DePaul opened the season with a 12th-place finish... Russell Budd was the top finisher in a group in 12th place... he posted a tournament total of 216 (E). John Dallio Memorial (Sept. 25-26) - The Blue Demons finished eighth at Ruffled Feathers GC... Russell Budd (t12th), Ben Westley (t14th) and Charles Boucher (t17th) each finished in the top 20. D.A. Weibring Intercollegiate (Oct. 2-3) - DePaul finished 17th among the 18 teams competing... Ben Westley was the top finisher in a tie for 13th. Georgetown Intercollegiate (Oct. 19-20) - Blue Demons finished 11th of 12 teams... Ben Westley and Maximilian Mayer were tied for 32nd... each totaled 221 (+8) for the event.
Looking Ahead: DePaul returns to action in February with The Match Play on Feb. 11-12 in Tampa, Fla. The Match Play features a tournament-style event between the BIG EAST's golf programs. It the first of five spring events before the BIG EAST Championship.
