CHICAGO - The DePaul women's basketball team used a balanced attack and topped Northwestern State, 93-56 on Friday in the opening round of the Maggie Dixon Classic at McGrath Arena.
Anna Martin led four Blue Demons in double figures as the sophomore eclipsed the 20 point mark for the third time in her career. Martin finished with 21, while Taylor Pikes added a career-high 19, Katherine Harry finished with 12 and Felicia Chester chipped in 10.
Northwestern State led for all of 16 seconds when Jessica McPhail hit her first of two free throws with 19:26 on the clock in the first. At 19:10, Chester made her first shot and DePaul was off to the races and finished the first half with a season-high 49 points.
Behind a career-best 17 points from Pikes in the first half, the Blue Demons shot .500 from the field while they outrebounded the Lady Demons, 25-19.
DePaul could not miss in the second half and shot a blistering 73 percent (16-for-22) in the last 20 minutes of action. The Blue Demons stretched their lead to as many as 40 points when China Threatt found a streaking Jasmine Penny for an 80-40 lead with 6:12 to play.
DePaul, who has been averaging 22.3 assists per game, tied a season-high with 28 assists on 35 baskets. Sam Quigley dished out six assists, while Threatt found the open player on four occasions.
DePaul held a 41-29 advantage on the boards with Keisha Hampton and Chester each finishing seven rebounds.
Ronikka Drake led Northwestern State with 13 points, while Trudy Armstead finished 12 for the Lady Demons.
The Blue Demons face UC-Riverside on Saturday at 7 p.m. for the Classic's Championship. Morgan State and Northwestern State play at 5 p.m. in the consolation game.
