COLUMBUS, Ohio - Reaching the second round of the ITA Midwest Regional means two things - you have won your first round match and that you are going to play some of the toughest players in the country in the Round of 32. The DePaul men's tennis players - Filip Dzanko and Sven Kasper did just that when they faced the No. 28 and No. 5 players in the nation on Saturday at Ohio State's Varsity Tennis Center and Jesse Owens West Tennis Center.
Dzanko went at No. 28 Casey Watt with everything he had in his arsenal. The Blue Demon sophomore looked like one of the top players in the country and won the opening set 6-2 over his Notre Dame rival.
Watt answered with a second-set victory which forced a deciding frame. The two BIG EAST Conference rivals battled for each point in the third set, but it was Notre Dame senior who advanced, winning the final set 7-5.
Kasper faced No. 5 Chase Buchanan on his home court. Buchanan, a senior on the Buckeye roster, topped the Blue Demon junior 6-1, 6-1.
DePaul senior George Chanturia also reached the Round of 32, but his regional run came to an end with a 7-6, 6-3 loss to Greg Andrews from Notre Dame.
Mathias Hambach and Aaron Chaffee ended DePaul's run in the doubles bracket, when the duo dropped a hard-fought match to the Toledo pair of Leo Sarria and Tomas Stillman.
The Blue Demons close out the fall portion of their schedule at the Wildcat Invitational, Oct. 21-23 in Evanston.
