St. John's Slips Past DePaul in BIG EAST Quarterfinals

NOTRE DAME, Ind. - The fourth seeded DePaul men's tennis team went point-for-point with fifth-seeded St. John's, but the Red Storm squeaked out a 4-3 win on Friday at Notre Dame's Courtney Tennis Center. The Blue Demons fall into the BIG EAST Championship consolation bracket and plays eighth-seeded Connecticut on Saturday at Noon (ET). The consolation match will be played at Leeper Park in downtown South Bend.
St. John's (17-6) has won its last nine matches and took the doubles point with wins on the first and second courts.
Needing to win four singles matches, DePaul (16-9) battled for every point as three matches went into the third set and the dual lasted nearly three hours.
The Red Storm went up 2-0 with a win on the sixth court, but the Blue Demons did not back down and won the next three matches to go up 3-2.
George Chanturia won his 22nd match of the season and improved to 9-2 in the second position with his impressive 6-3, 6-3 win over Milo Hauk.
Filip Dzanko followed with a 7-6 (4), 6-2 victory Mischa Koran on the fourth court and Matija Palinic gutted out a three-set win on the third court. Dzanko won his 14th of the year while Palinic tallied his 18th singles victory and improved to 6-5 in the third position.
With two matches battling deep into their respective third sets, but on opposite sides to the complex, both teams divided their attention and cheered loudly with each point.
Playing on the top court, DePaul's Sven Kasper and St. John's Stefan Bojic were locked in an epic battle. Kasper won the first set 7-6 (5), but Bojic won the final two stanzas to tie the dual at three all.
As all eyes turned to the fifth court, where Blue Demon senior Ben Hartman and the Red Storm's Gustav Kallen were going at one another with everything they had in their respective arsenals. Hartman took the first set 6-2, but Kallen countered with a 6-4 victory in the second set. Going point-for-point and game-for-game, Kallen took the final two games to seal the Red Storm's 4-3 victory.
St. John's has now won both series duals against DePaul. The Red Storms' wins have both come in the opening round of the BIG EAST Championship - this year and also in 2007. St. John's moves into the semifinals and plays top-seeded Louisville on Saturday.
