Chanturia Named All-BIG EAST Performer

CHICAGO - DePaul junior standout George Chanturia earned All-BIG EAST Conference honors it was announced today by the league office. Chanturia becomes the third consecutive Blue Demon to earn All-Conference accolades.
A transfer from Oklahoma, Chanturia joined the Blue Demons this season and made an immediate impact. The junior led DePaul with a 23-12 singles mark while he combined for a 17-8 record in duals in the second and third positions.
The Tbilisi, Georgia native helped the Blue Demons to a fifth place finish at the BIG EAST Championship with a 2-1 record in the second position. Chanturia posted a 2-3 mark against BIG EAST foes while he closed out the season by winning seven of his last nine matches.
Chanturia went 22-14 in doubles. The junior played in all three spots and was partnered Ben Hartman and Matija Palinic throughout the season. Chanturia and Hartman closed out the year with an 8-4 win over Marquette at the league championship -- the win would clinch the doubles point for DePaul, who went on to win the dual 4-2.
Chanturia becomes the third Blue Demon to earn all-conference honors since DePaul joined the BIG EAST in 2005-06. Jose Moncada (2009) and Vanja Grgec (2010) were DePaul's previous all-conference honorees under head coach Matt Brothers.
The Blue Demons finished the season ranked No. 67 in the Campbell's/ITA team poll. DePaul reached as high as No. 47 and played seven ranked teams this season.
Chanturia and Palinic return next year to lead the Blue Demons as seniors. DePaul also returns Filip Dzanko, Mathias Hambach and Sven Kasper.
