CHICAGO, Ill. - It may sound a bit strange, but DePaul scored one too many goals on Wednesday night.
David Selvaggi jump-started the Blue Demons with a goal in the fifth minute against Loyola Chicago, but an own goal in the 85th minute relegated DePaul to a 1-1 tie in double overtime at Loyola Soccer Park.
In the second overtime, Antonio Aguilar connected on a header in the 104th minute that was saved by Loyola goalkeeper Peter McKeown.
It was the seventh time DePaul (1-3-1) forced McKeown to come up with a stop.
Loyola's Eric Nock took a shot in the 108th minute that was saved by DePaul goalie Joe Ferrari. Loyola (1-3-1) took the only shot in a defensive first overtime.
"We dominated in every way, but soccer can sometimes be a cruel game," said DePaul coach Craig Blazer. "Unfortunately, we scored one on ourselves after a failure to clear the ball.
"We're disappointed with tonight's result, but our guys still did some good things."
DePaul took the fight to the Ramblers right from the opening kick, beginning with Selvaggi's first collegiate goal just 4:27 into the match.
The sequence began with freshman Thiago Ganancio winning the ball near midfield and sending it wide to freshman Anthony Hunter.
The speedy Hunter raced upfield and sent a through ball to freshman Selvaggi.
"Selvaggi hit a quick shot from 12 yards out that beat the Loyola keeper," Blazer said. "The brilliance of being a forward is, don't do too much.
"All three of those guys did a nice job combining for the goal. It was well-earned."
Aguilar came close to winning it near the end.
"Thiago served up a nice ball and Tony made a great move re-directing it over the goalkeepers' head," Blazer said. "He just didn't get enough on it.
"The coaching staff gave Ferrari recognition for making an outstanding save at the end of the game. The whole group out there defended well."
In the second half, Loyola didn't take its first shot until the 77th minute. By then, DePaul had a commanding 10-2 advantage in shots.
The Ramblers did get off back-to-back shots in the 84th minute, leading to the own goal.
The Blue Demons kept the pressure on McKeown in the first half after Selvaggi's early score with Aguilar, Selvaggi and Matt Leinauer putting shots on frame that the Rambler goalie had to turn away.
In addition, Michael Stankiewicz fired a pair of shots while Mark Haas and Austin Toth each had one attempt in the first 45 minutes.
By halftime, DePaul had outshot the host team 8-2 with four shots on goal to none for Loyola.
"We're headed in the right direction," Blazer said. "Our guys and coaches know we're a good team.
"We came away with a tie tonight. The next step is getting the win."
That could come on Saturday when the Blue Demons travel to Macomb, Ill. for a 1 p.m. match against Western Illinois.
