MACOMB, Ill. - Nothing went right for DePaul on Saturday.
The Blue Demons gave up two goals in each half of a 4-0 loss to Western Illinois in a match where both the offense and defense could not get untracked.
"This was not a good day," said DePaul coach Craig Blazer. "We played a good, hard-working team and did not match their energy level.
"We did not play DePaul soccer and are completely embarrassed by our performance.
Nathan Bruinsma opened the scoring in the 23rd minute after assists from Alexis Dominquez and Husref Jupic.
Just two minutes before halftime, the Leathernecks struck again. This time, Kooten Johnson found the back of the net after being set up by Charlie Bales' free kick.
Jupic made it 3-0 with a shot from five yards out in the 78th minute as Bales got his second assist and Mariano Leo his first.
Three minutes later, Aaron Appel scored his first goal of the season from 10 yards away as Dominquez picked up his second assist.
After the progress the Blue Demons had made in the last week, battling No. 4/3 Creighton for two overtimes before falling 1-0 and a 1-1 tie with Loyola Chicago, Blazer was disappointed by Saturday's effort.
"There was a lack of competitiveness," Blazer said. "We've got to take a hard look at ourselves and figure out a way to move forward.
"We'll take responsibility, be accountable and get it right."
The Blue Demons look to bounce back with a 7 p.m. match on Wednesday at Drake.
