ORLANDO, Fla. - DePaul senior Ben Westley was the top finisher for the Blue Demons at the BIG EAST Championship on Tuesday. Westley finished in a tie for 19th place while the team was 10th at the annual league tournament.
After starting his round on the 10th hole, Westley was flirting with his second straight top 10 finish at the BIG EAST Championship as he was in a tie for 12th following the back nine. Sitting at even par, he carded bogies in three of his last six holes to finish the third round with a three-over score of 75. His tournament total of 222 (+6) put him in a five-way tie for 19th place.
A year ago, he finished in a tie for 10th and is one of three DePaul golfers to post back-to-back top 20 finishes at the BIG EAST Championship. Westley joins Cory Blenkush and Greg Doherty who both finished in the top 20 at the 2007 and 2008 BIG EAST events.
Russell Budd recorded a 75 in his third round to finish tied for 31st place. His score of 225 put him at nine-over par for the tournament with rounds of 73 and 77 on Sunday and Monday.
Jan Juelicher finished in 37th, Moritz Ackerhans was 48th and John Pavelko placed 59th for DePaul. Juelicher's tournament total of 227 (+11) included a one-over score of 73 in the third round while Ackerhans finished at 232 (+16) after shooting a 78 on Tuesday. Pavelko finished with an 84 in the third circuit to put him at 246 for the tournament.
Notre Dame's Max Scodro won his second straight individual title that also led to the Irish winning their second consecutive team championship. Scodro finished with a one-shot advantage over Louisville's Justin Dorward with a tournament score of 210 (-6). The Irish claimed the team title by 16 strokes over second-place Louisville. Villanova was third, St. John's was fourth and Georgetown rounded out the top five.
