PHILADELPHIA, Pa. -- Both the DePaul men's and women's track and field teams sit in fourth place after day one of the BIG EAST Outdoor Championships, hosted by Villanova University in Philadelphia.
The Blue Demon women posted 23 points for the day, 18 points off Villanova's first-place pace. The men, meanwhile, tallied 21 points. Georgetown (65) leads the men's standings.
Much of the action was pushed back to the late hours of the day; Saturday's competition did not conclude until approximately 9:45 p.m.
On the women's side, Ayesha Ewing qualified for the Sunday's final of the 400-meter dash by logging a sixth place finish (56.64). Ewing also qualified for the 200 final by taking fourth place (24.64). In the 100-meter dash, Tayler Whittler's time of 12.09 seconds allowed her to cross the finish line in second place, landing her in Sunday's final. Shayna Nwokenkwo will join her; she took eighth in the same race (12.34). Whittler also took third in the 200 to move on to Sunday (24.46).
In the 400-meter hurdles, both Rebecca Adamcheck (1:04.69) and Ashley Holden (1:05.66) moved onto Sunday's final, finishing in sixth and seventh, respectively.
In the finals of the women's long jump, MaShayla Kirksy (5.76m) placed second, just 0.2 meters shy of the conference championship. Another Blue Demon field event medalist was Sarah Moss, who took third in the hammer throw (50.45m).
In men's competitions, Mac Melto won the 400-meter prelims with a time of 47.41 seconds to advance to Sunday's final. Brandon Threats (48.18) took third in the same race to advance. Xavier Jones will be in the 100-meter final tomorrow as well; the freshman won the prelims by posting a time of 10.77 seconds.
DePaul went 1-2-3 in the prelims of the 200-meter dash. The Blue Demons' Threats (21.72), Melto (21.81) and Jones (21.82) swept the event and will all represent their school in tomorrow's final.
Chris Miedema moved on to Sunday's final of the 800-meter run by placing seventh in the event. He crossed the finish line in 1:50.60 seconds.
The men's high jump saw Durrell McDonald medal for the Blue Demons. The sophomore took second thanks to his best jump of 2.08 meters. Adam Kovacs reached the podium in the hammer throw (55.04m) as well.
The 2014 BIG EAST Conference Championships conclude tomorrow in Philadelphia.
