SANTEE, Calif. - The DePaul golf team started its spring season by winning the Carlton Oaks Invitational on Tuesday. The Blue Demons were paced by freshman Freddy Thomas, who won the individual title by two strokes.
DePaul entered the final round with a four-stroke lead over BIG EAST Conference rival Butler. The Blue Demons combined for a 302 in the final round and 915 for the tournament and held off a surging Grand Canyon, who finished in second place - two strokes off lead (917). Butler was in third with a score of 925.
Thomas entered Tuesday's round in a three-way tie for third place Western Illinois' Nate Davis and Cal Sate-Bakersfield Nathan Green. Thomas carded a final round of 72 (E), his low round of the tournament to earn medalist honors for the first time this season. Thomas also recorded rounds of 73 and 79 on Monday.
Adrian Halimi took sixth place (229 - +13). The junior entered Tuesday's round in first place, but shot a 78 (+6) to slip five spots in the standings.
Jonathan Goldstein, who was playing in the tournament as an individual, tied for seventh place after shooting season-best, three-round total of 230 (+14). The Blue Demon sophomore carded a 79 (+7) in the final round.
James Lelliott and Jonathan Hewett tied for ninth place with Butler's Andrew Eiler. Lelliott shot a 79 (+7) and Hewett carded a 73 (+1) on Tuesday.
DePaul Jan Juelicher rounded out DePaul's contingent in a tie for 17th place.
The Blue Demons return to the course on Feb. 22-24 at the Neville Kovacs Group Intercollegiate in Goodyear Arizona.
