HONOLULU - The DePaul softball team continued its slide as the Blue Demons dropped their fourth game in a row to open the 2015 campaign in an 11-3 defeat at the hands of No. 4/3 Oklahoma on Saturday afternoon.
DePaul (0-4) had trouble getting a solid start once again. The Blue Demons surrendered two runs to the Sooners (4-0) on two walks and two wild pitches in the opening frame.
The road team would respond, however, as Morgan Maize smacked her second home run of the season to get DePaul on the board in the third inning. Back-to-back doubles by Dylan Christensen and Nicole Pihl tied the game up at 2-2.
The game did not stay tied for long, as Oklahoma added a run in the bottom half of the third on a single through the right side following another Blue Demon error.
After keeping DePaul with a clean slate in the fourth, the Sooners flex their muscles and plated four runs in the fourth, highlighted by a two-run single, to make the score 7-2.
The Blue Demons responded with another run in the top of the fifth following an RBI single by Pihl with the bases loaded. The Sooners got out of the jam and maintained a four-run cushion heading into the home half of the inning.
A solo blast by Shelby Pendley of Oklahoma put the Sooners back up by five at 8-3. That lead would hold until the bottom of the sixth when the home team laced four hits and added three runs to end the game by run-rule, 11-3.
Mary Connolly threw five innings and was tagged with the loss after giving up eight runs, with four of them earned.
DePaul had seven different players register a hit, with Staci Bonezek, Maize and Pihl all slashing multiple hits.
The Blue Demons return to the diamond later this evening when they take on St. Mary's in the consolation game of the Hawaii Paradise Classic. Live stats can be found here.
