Softball Downs Seton Hall Behind Offensive Onslaught

SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. - The DePaul softball team tallied a season-high in runs and completed a five-inning drubbing of Seton Hall, 14-5. The Blue Demons (9-16, 2-0 BIG EAST) collected a hit from 10 different players and scored in four of the five innings to grab their second win of the conference slate.
Dylan Christensen, Sabrina Kuchta and Megan Leyva paced the offense, each adding two hits on four plate appearances.
The first inning came and went without damage being done by either side until DePaul came to the plate in the top of the second.
The Blue Demons totaled seven runs on seven hits in the frame with all the runs coming with two outs. Morgan Maize got the scoring started with a RBI single, scoring Kuchta. Mary Connolly and Kali Gardner followed that by plating two runs each on singles to the outfield. Nicole Pihl rounded out the inning with a two-run blast - her seventh of 2015.
Megan Leyva held Seton Hall (11-17, 0-2) with a run in the second, while the Blue Demons added another run by a bases-loaded walk by Christensen to take an 8-0 lead.
The Pirates responded with a big inning of their own, scoring five runs on eight hits and were aided by a Blue Demon error in the home half of the third stanza.
Brittany Boesel put DePaul back on the board in the fourth with a two-RBI double in the left-center gap to give the Blue Demons a five-run margin at 10-5.
DePaul continued to press the issue heading into the fifth frame. Christensen continued her power surge by smacking her fourth solo shot in three games. Ali Lenti added to the scoring by drawing a bases-loaded walk while Naomi Tellez rounded out the Blue Demons' best offensive day of the season with a run-scoring single that plated two and made the score, 14-5, in favor of DePaul.
Leyva slammed the door in the fifth and gave the Blue Demons the victory by run rule.
DePaul will look to complete the sweep of Seton Hall tomorrow afternoon at 1 p.m.
Notes: This was the 19th meeting between the programs all-time... the Blue Demons have won the last 12 with the latest Pirate victory coming in 2009... DePaul tallied a season-high in runs with 14... the last time the Blue Demons scored 14-plus runs was on April 27 last season when they defeated Villanova, 15-0... DePaul scored double-digit runs for the third time this season... Dylan Christensen picked up her 10th multi-hit game of the season... Megan Leyva tallied her fifth complete game of 2015... Staci Bonezek started the 170th game of her career... Sabrina Kuchta scored a career-best three runs.
