CHICAGO -- Timely hitting and solid pitching guided the DePaul softball team in its 6-2 victory over Providence on Saturday afternoon. The Blue Demons (12-6, 5-0 BIG EAST) picked up double-digit hits (10) for the fourth time in the last five games.
The offense was led by Nicole Pihl and Dylan Christensen, each recording multi-hit games for DePaul. Pihl went 3-for-3 with two RBI, while Christensen went 2-for-4 with a run scored.
Megan Leyva pitched one of the finer complete games of her young career. Leyva threw seven strong innings and limited the Friars (5-13, 0-2) to just two runs on seven hits.
The Blue Demons got on the board first when Kali Gardner scored all the way from first following a Pihl double in the gap. Brittany Boesel plated another run for DePaul on a RBI single to make it 2-0 in favor of the home team.
Providence, despite scoring 16 runs earlier in the first game of the day, had trouble producing any damage until the fourth inning. The Friars knotted the game up at 2-2 after a sacrifice fly and RBI double that capped a four-hit inning.
DePaul responded quickly when it took advantage of a Providence miscue with the bases loaded that scored both Haydn Christensen and Gardner. Leyva helped her own cause by adding another run to the total with a sacrifice fly to make it a Blue Demon lead, 5-2.
Pihl notched DePaul's sixth run when she smacked a two-out, RBI single in the sixth frame.
Leyva kept the Friar bats at bay to preserve a 6-2 victory and give the Blue Demons a five-game winning streak.
