DePaul Begins BIG EAST Title Quest on Sunday

CHICAGO - DePaul will be ready to defend its BIG EAST Women's Basketball Tournament title this weekend as the conference's postseason event unfolds Saturday at Allstate Arena.
The Blue Demons enter the tournament as the No. 2 seed after sharing the regular-season title with Seton Hall. The Pirates are the top seed by virtue of their two victories over DePaul in league play.
The tournament opens up at 2 p.m. Saturday with No. 8 seed Marquette (8-21, 4-14 in the BIG EAST) taking on No. 9 seed Providence (6-23, 3-15).
Following that game will be the matchup of particular interest to Blue Demon nation. No. 7 Xavier (16-13, 8-10) opposes No. 10 Georgetown (4-26, 2-16) with the winner advancing to face coach Doug Bruno's team in the 6 p.m. quarterfinal on Sunday.
Both first-round games are being shown on the BIG EAST Digital Network.
DePaul (23-7, 15-3) is aiming to repeat last year's achievement of winning one game in a row three times to repeat as BIG EAST champions and secure an automatic berth in the NCAA tournament.
Leading the way will be BIG EAST Player of the Year Brittany Hrynko who leads the league in scoring and steals and is second in assists and three-point baskets.
Megan Podkowa, Chanise Jenkins and Jessica January are among the top 17 scorers in the conference as the Blue Demons led the BIG EAST averaging 88 points per game. DePaul is also No. 1 in three-point baskets, assists, scoring margin and turnover margin.
Tournament favorites DePaul and Seton Hall both come into the weekend riding four-game winning streaks.
Seton Hall (26-4, 15-3) is led by its All-BIG EAST offensive trio of Tabatha Richardson-Smith, Daisha Simmons and Ka-Deidre Simmons who rank 3-4-5 in the conference in scoring. They combine to average 52.5 points per game, and Daisha Simmons was voted BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Year. The Pirates open on Sunday against the Marquette-Providence winner.
No. 3 seed Villanova (18-12, 12-6) features a deliberate, patient style of play that can frustrate teams looking to sprint up and down the court. The Wildcats are the league's top defensive team, holding opponents to 55.5 points a game. They are also tops in assist/turnover ratio and feature All-BIG EAST guard Caroline Coyer and BIG EAST Sixth Woman Award winner Taylor Holeman.
The Wildcats go against No. 6 Butler (14-15, 10-8) and All-BIG EAST forward Ijeoma Uchendu in Sunday's quarterfinals that are being televised on FOX Sports 2.
Fourth-seeded St. John's (20-9, 11-7) is led by All-BIG EAST selection Aliyyah Handford---second in scoring behind Hrynko---along with Danaejah Grant and the league's leading rebounder, Amber Thompson. The Red Storm take on No. 5 Creighton (17-12, 10-8) and All-BIG EAST guard Marissa Janning in Sunday's quarterfinals.
Monday's first semifinal game tips off at 5:30 p.m. and is being televised on FOX Sports 1. The second semifinal scheduled for 8 p.m. will be televised on FOX Sports 2.
Tuesday's championship finale will tip at 7 p.m. and be televised on FOX Sports 1.
