Blue Demons Fall in Extra Innings to Georgetown

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- The DePaul softball team dropped the second game of a double header at Georgetown on Saturday afternoon, 5-4, in extra innings. The Blue Demons (14-18, 6-1 BIG EAST) fell behind early by as many as four runs before tying the game at 4-4 following a huge sixth inning. DePaul eventually fell in the bottom of the ninth.
Morgan Maize paved the way at the plate for the Blue Demons. Maize went 3-for-5 that included a double and two singles.
Dylan Christensen, Mary Connolly and Megan Leyva each chimed in with RBI doubles to round out the offense.
The Blue Demons used the platoon of Maxine Rodriguez, Connolly and Leyva to carry the team in the circle for all nine innings of play.
After a clean first inning, Georgetown (13-23, 3-6) opened the scoring with a two-run second frame aided by a defensive error to make it 2-0 in favor of the home team.
The Hoyas added to their lead in the third and fourth stanzas following RBI doubles to bring the margin to 4-0.
DePaul was held to just two hits before the team erupted for four runs on five hits in the top of the sixth.
Maize opened the inning with a single before being plated by Connolly on a RBI double. Christensen swapped places with Connolly following a shot to center and was later pinch-ran for by Cherelle Chambers.
Nicole Pihl brought home Chambers after lacing a RBI single to left that brought the Blue Demons within one. Two batters later, Leyva plated Pihl with the third double of the inning and knotted the game up at 4-4.
Both teams had chances to put away the game in the seventh with runners in scoring position, but were unable to do so.
Following a quick eighth inning, the Hoyas took the game in the ninth as Gabriela Elvina worked her way around the bases and scored on a wild pitch.
The Blue Demons conclude their series with Georgetown tomorrow morning in the rubber-match scheduled for 10 a.m.
Notes: This was the 12th meeting between the programs all-time... the loss snapped an 11-game winning streak in the series for DePaul... Morgan Maize continued her hitting streak to a season-best 10 games... Maize also reached base for the 10th-straight game... Mary Connolly has reached base safely for the 10th straight game as well... Maize tallied her ninth multiple-hit game of the season and third with at least three hits in the leadoff spot... DePaul has 13 of its 14 wins with Maize in the opening spot in the lineup... Nicole Pihl has a hit in the last six games... the Blue Demons drop to 12-4 when allowing five or fewer runs.
