NEW YORK - After leading the Blue Demons to a three-game sweep over Villanova last weekend, Mary Connolly was named the BIG EAST Player of the Week, as announced by the league office on Monday. This was the fourth time the senior has been tabbed as the conference's top performer of the week in her career.
Connolly was a force to be reckoned with both at the plate and in the circle against the Wildcats. The senior hit .455 with two homers and seven RBI to pace DePaul's offense which outscored Villanova in the three games, 22-5. Connolly slugged 1.182 for the weekend and got on base at a .455 clip.
The Winfield, Ill. native started on the mound in all three duels with the Wildcats and compiled at 3-0 record with a 1.84 ERA. Connolly tallied eight strikeouts and kept hitters off-balance, holding Villanova to a team batting average of .192.
Connolly's best all-around performance came in the first game of the doubleheader on Saturday. Connolly went the full seven innings on the rubber, allowing just four hits and one run. At the plate, the senior went 2-for-3 and collected all three of DePaul's RBI by virtue of a double and home run in the 3-1 victory.
In the series finale, Connolly paced the barrage of hits by the Blue Demon offense by going 3-for-4 with four RBI in a 14-1 drubbing of Villanova.
Connolly and the DePaul softball team return to the diamond on Wednesday at Northwestern. The team then wraps up the regular season by hosting Butler, May 2-3. For ticket information, call 773-325-SLAM (7546).
