Blue Demons Fall at Northwestern

EVANSTON, Ill. -- The DePaul softball team dropped its first game in 11 days when it fell at the hands of Northwestern on Wednesday, 12-1. The Blue Demons (20-22, 11-3 BIG EAST) tied their lowest hit total of the season with two in the loss.
Mary Connolly led the charge at the plate with a 1-for-2 performance that included a RBI.
Nicole Pihl added the other hit and also went 1-for-2 in the process.
Connolly got the Blue Demons on the board in the team's first at-bat. The senior belted her 15th home run of the season and gave DePaul a 1-0 lead.
The Wildcats (25-19, 8-7 Big Ten) quickly responded with a two-run blast in the home half of the first from the bat of Andrea DiPrima.
After a spotless second frame, Northwestern added a run in the third to make the score line, 3-1.
The game broke open in the fourth inning when the Wildcats plated nine runs and made the score, 12-1, in favor of the home team. Northwestern did all of its damage in the stanza with two outs.
DePaul managed to put a runner on base with an Ellie Forkin walk in the fifth, but was unable to push across any runs and dropped the contest by run rule.
Connolly got the start in the circle and struck out five Wildcat batters in 3.2 innings of work.
Kristen Wood hurled five innings for Northwestern and limited the Blue Demons to just two hits, while striking out eight hitters.
DePaul closes out its regular season schedule with a three-game series against Butler at Cacciatore Stadium, May 2-3.
Notes: This was the 58th meeting between the programs all-time... Northwestern leads the overall series, 39-19... the home team has taken the last seven decisions, dating back to 2009... Mary Connolly's home run in the first pushed her into a tie for second on DePaul's single season home run list... Connolly needs just one more to tie Saskia Roberson (2003) to tie for the program record... DePaul dropped to 0-4 versus Big Ten opponents in 2015... the last time the Blue Demons were held to two hits was on Feb. 6 at Hawaii... Brittany Boesel earned her 180th start... Nicole Pihl notched her 60th career hit... Megan Leyva made her 19th appearance on the mound this season.
