OLYMPIA FIELDS, Ill. - Playing in suburban Olympia Fields, DePaul sophomore standout Freddy Thomas finished the 2015 U.S. Amateur Championship qualifying rounds on Tuesday.
The All-BIG EAST Conference performer carded a 36-hole total of 151 (+11) with rounds of 76 (+6) and 75 (+5), but did not advance into the tournament's match-play rounds. The top 64 golfers advanced to play on Wednesday.
"Freddy played very well, although the numbers didn't show it," head coach Betty Kaufmann said on Wednesday. "He really just didn't make enough birdies."
"I am really proud of Freddy, it was his first time playing in the Amateur and it proved to be a great learning experience.
"He made a lot of good up and downs to save for par, but did not capitalize on birdie opportunities," Kaufmann added.
Thomas' lone birdie for the tournament came during the first round on Monday when the sophomore carded a three on the par-4, 450-yard 17th hole.
For the tournament, Thomas finished 24 holes at par.
On Tuesday, Thomas sat at even par after the front nine, but had three bogeys and a double-bogey on the back nine to finish the day at 75 (+5).
"The last couple holes, Freddy played with frustration and quickly as the storms started to barrel down on the field," Kaufmann said.
Thomas led DePaul with a 74.5stroke average as a freshman and tied for third at the BIG EAST Conference Championship.
The 2015-16 DePaul golf season tees off on Sept. 21 at the Fighting Irish Golf Classic.
