Blue Demons Fall in First Game in Las Vegas

LAS VEGAS -- DePaul dropped a 72-58 decision Thursday evening to Wyoming in the first of two games at the Continental Tire Las Vegas Classic. Tre'Darius McCallum led the Blue Demons with 18 points and six rebounds.
It was the McCallum show early on as the junior forward scored all seven points with his three-pointer giving the Blue Demons a 7-6 advantage less than five minutes into the game.
DePaul (7-5) took its largest lead of the opening frame when a jumper by Eli Cain made the score 19-9 with 9:52 until intermission. Wyoming threatened and knotted the score three times in the final five minutes before the two sides went into halftime at 29-29.
Brandon Cyrus, Billy Garrett Jr. and Eli Cain scored early in the second half to push the DePaul lead back to 35-29 before the Cowboys put together a 24-5 run to take over the game. A three-pointer by Alexander Aka Gorski gave Wyoming a 53-40 lead with 8:23 left on the clock.
Garrett scored 17 points with three steals to join McCallum in double-figures. As a team, the Blue Demons struggled from the field going just 20-for-71 (.282) for the game.
Wyoming (10-2) led by as many as 15 points in the second as Hayden Dalton led the Cowboys with 18 points and 12 rebounds.
The Blue Demons will play in the consolation game on Friday against either Missouri State or USC. Start time at Orleans Arena is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. PT at Orleans Arena on FS1 and WSCR 670 AM.
Postgame Notes
- DePaul shot a season-low .282 (20-71) from the field... it's the first game that DePaul shot 30 percent or worse since shooting .292 (19-65) against Arizona State on Dec. 6, 2013.
- Tre'Darius McCallum scored a career-high (second time) 18 points... he has reached double-figures in six of 12 game this season.
- DePaul leads the series 2-1... Thursday was the first meeting since the 1944-45 season.
