Softball falls 11-6 to UNLV

LAS VEGAS- The DePaul softball team fell 11-6 to UNLV in its first game of the Rebel Classic Thursday night at the Eller Media Stadium.
DePaul (3-13) and UNLV (11-10) recorded 13 hits each. Naomi Tellez and Haydn Christensen led DePaul with two RBI each.
The Blue Demons scored first in the top of the second. Kali Gardner singled up the middle and advanced to second after the Rebels pitcher, Alyssa Batastini walked Nicole Pihl. A UNLV fielder's choice stopped Gardner at third, but allowed Haydn Christensen to reach first and Pihl second. Pihl scored after Tellez notched a RBI single up the middle.
In the third inning for DePaul, Dylan Christensen scored one run off a RBI single from Gardner, but UNLV responded with four runs to take a 4-2 lead.
The Rebels recorded an additional five runs in the fourth inning for a 9-2 score.
Morgan Maize pitched for the Blue Demons until a three-run home run by UNLV put Megan Leyva in the circle. The Rebels scored their final two runs of the game off a another homer.
DePaul battled back in the fifth by scoring three runs off Rebels new pitcher, Morgan Ettinger. Leyva singled to right field and advanced to third after Pihl hit a double to center. Haydn Christensen blasted her first career triple to right center, scoring Leyva and pinch runner Cherelle Chambers. Tellez approached the plate next and notched her second RBI of the game to score Haydn Christensen, but grounded out to second.
UNLV responded with one run in the bottom of the fifth and another in the sixth to finalize its 11 runs.
Leyva scored DePaul's sixth run of the game in the top of the seventh. The sophomore knocked out a solo home run to left center off the Rebels third pitcher of the game, Janine Petmecky.
Maize (3-8) collected her eighth loss of the season in the circle. The senior allowed nine hits, and seven runs, six of them earned and struck out two. Leyva allowed four hits and struck out one.
UNLV's Batastini (4-2) recorded her fourth win of the season. She struck out three and allowed eight hits, two runs, both were earned.
The Blue Demons return to the Eller Media Stadium tomorrow for two games. DePaul is set to take on Utah State at 11 a.m. and Valparaiso at 1:15 p.m. CT.
