LAWRENCE, Kan. - After weather suspended Thursday of the 2016 NCAA West Preliminaries, DePaul track and field completed Friday's action with Tayler Whittler and Jeffrey Sattler recording strong performances in their respective events.
Despite being delayed a day, Whittler had a strong showing in the 100m dash. The senior was set in the sixth heat where her season-best time of 11.60 ranked her 46th among 48 competitors. A clean start from Whittler put her in a prime position to sprint against the top student-athletes in the heat. Whittler enjoyed a strong kick in the final stretch to finish fourth with a time of 11.64.
Whittler's time placed her 21st overall in the event, defeating 25 other finisher. The DePaul senior missed qualifying for the next round (top finisher in each heat plus the next six times) due to the expedited schedule after Thursday's postponement.
Sattler was in the sixth and final heat of the men's 800m in Friday's quarterfinals race. On the first lap, Sattler was boxed in early, but pushed his way to the front at the beginning of the second lap. In the final 100m, Sattler went into a full sprint and crossed the line at 1:51.49.
Sattler placed sixth in his heat and 34th overall after the event was completed. That ranking is nine places higher than his initial seed time that put him at 43rd. Sattler was less than two seconds off of the heat winner Jonah Koech from UTEP (1:49.89).
The 2016 NCAA West Prelims continue Saturday for the Blue Demons as Brian Mada jumps in the men's triple jump at 9 a.m. CT and Whittler sprints in the women's 200m at 12:30 p.m. CT. Live results and video links are found on the DePaul track and field schedule page.
