Seventh Inning Surge Puts Softball Past Northwestern

CHICAGO -- The DePaul softball team ended its regular season at home on a high note with a 4-3 victory over crosstown rival, Northwestern Wednesday evening at Cacciatore Stadium.
With the win, DePaul (24-24) extends its win streak to three and finishes the regular season with an 11-3 record at home.
Northwestern (22-25) notched the first run in the first inning.
DePaul responded with two runs in the sixth. With Dylan Christensen and Morgan Maize on first, Tellez notched a RBI single and scored Christensen.
Maize then came around to score an unearned run after a Northwestern error.
In the seventh, a two-run homer by the Wildcats put them back in the lead 3-2.
The Blue Demons battled back to plate their final two runs in the bottom of the seventh. With Alysia Rodriguez on second and Gena Lenti on first, Micah Fitzgerald notched a sacrifice bunt to put the two in scoring position. Rodriguez went on to score off a Wildcats fielder's choice as Dylan Christensen reached base.
After Northwestern's pitcher, Amy Letourneau intentionally walked Maize to load the bases, Naomi Tellez hit a sacrifice fly to left field and scored Lenti for the game-winning run.
Letourneau (11-10) pitched six and two-third innings for Northwestern. She allowed two hits and struck out five.
Megan Leyva (7-10) recorded the win in the circle for DePaul. She pitched for three innings, allowed three hits and two runs. Maize pitched for the first four innings. She allowed three hits, one run and struck out four.
DePaul travels to Omaha, Neb. this weekend to take on Creighton for a three-game series May 7-8. The series marks DePaul's last of the regular season. Saturday's doubleheader begins at noon CT. The game on Sunday will be broadcast on the BIG EAST Digital Network with an 11 a.m. CT start.
