Softball Clinches Regular Season Title, Defeats Creighton in Game Two

OMAHA, Neb. - DePaul softball clinched the BIG EAST Regular Season title with a 9-1 victory over Creighton in game two Saturday afternoon at Creighton Sports Complex.
DePaul (26-24, 15-3 BIG EAST) earns the No. 1 seed in next week's BIG EAST Conference tournament May 13-14 at the Ballpark at Rosemont. This is the first time DePaul has clinched the Regular Season title since 2014.
The Blue Demons scored six of their runs in the top of the second. With Haydn Christensen on first, Sabrina Kuchta on second and Angela Scalzitti on third, Micah Fitzgerald singled up the middle to drive in Kuchta and Scalzitti.
Haydn Christensen scored DePaul's third run off a Bluejays' (25-21, 7-10 BIG EAST) throwing error.
Creighton's starting pitcher Sydney Eck went on to walk Naomi Tellez and Nicole Pihl to force Fitzgerald home. Michal Hylton replaced the Bluejays' starting pitcher in the circle and issued two more walks to plate DePaul's final two runs of the inning.
Creighton scored its lone run in the bottom of the second.
DePaul wouldn't score again until the top of the fifth. With Hadyn Christensen on third, Maize singled down the left field line for the sophomore to score her second run of the game.
In the top of the sixth after pinch hitter Marsha' Pendilton was walked, Kali Gardner notched a two-run homer for the final 9-1 mark.
Megan Leyva (8-10) recorded the win in the circle for DePaul. She pitched four innings, allowed four hits, one run and struck out two. Maize pitched for the final two innings and allowed one hit.
Eck (13-10) suffered the loss for the Bluejays. She pitched for one and two-third innings, allowed four hits, six runs and struck out one. Hylton pitched for four and one-third innings. She allowed five hits, three runs and struck out one.
DePaul and Creighton wrap up the three-game series on Sunday at 11 a.m. The game will be broadcast on the BIG EAST Digital Network.
