CHICAGO - It was a thriller as good as advertised with the two highest-scoring teams in the BIG EAST battling into overtime Saturday night.
When the dust finally cleared, Marquette snapped No. 19/18 DePaul's 10-game winning streak with a 102-101 decision that went right down to the final seconds.
Brooke Schulte's career-high 35 points and Jacqui Grant's career-high 27 points and career-high 17 rebounds weren't quite enough on this night. Danielle King led Marquette (16-4, 7-2) with 27 points. Amarah Coleman added 17 points and made some huge shots in crunch time while Tanita Allen scored 12 points for DePaul (16-5, 8-1).
Schulte fouled out in overtime as DePaul took a 99-95 lead on a Grant basket. Marquette scored five straight to move in front 100-99. Coleman scored to put the home team in front by one. Back came Erika Davenport (19 points) with the winning basket inside.
The Golden Eagles went on a 9-0 run in reducing DePaul's lead to 73-72 in the fourth quarter. Schulte and Allen responded with five unanswered points and it was 78-72 with 4:40 left in the game.
King hit a corner three and it was a three-point game. It was tied four times down the stretch. Coleman's basket with four seconds left in regulation made it 91-89, but Allazia Blockton (24 points) scored at the buzzer to force the overtime.
Marquette opened the second half with a full-court press hoping to cut into its 15-point halftime deficit. The Golden Eagles were within 51-42 midway through the third quarter when Schulte hit her patented turnaround jumper on consecutive possessions for a 55-42 lead. Grant already had a double-double.
Schulte and Marquette's McKayla Yentz took turns hitting big shots. Yentz's third 3-pointer of the quarter brought her team within 67-59 heading into the final 10 minutes.
Blue Demons' point guard Lauren Prochaska, who is critical to breaking the press, was sidelined early in the third quarter with an injury and did not return. Her absence resulted in Marquette increasing its pressure defense in the fourth quarter and overtime in disrupting DePaul's attack.
DePaul came out firing right from the opening tip, hitting its first six shots of the game. Kelly Campbell's three made it 15-6 at the first media timeout. Marquette came within 21-15 when DePaul re-asserted itself. Allen calmly drilled a three-pointer at the buzzer for a 26-18 lead after one quarter.
Grant was effective early, hitting five of her first six shots. Her teammates did a good job of spotting her down low and she finished.
Up and down the court they went as the pace only got quicker as the second quarter wore on. Lauren Prochaska's layup provided a 36-21 lead midway through the period.
Schulte returned after sitting with two fouls and proceeded to score six points in a row for a 42-27 advantage. Grant's shot sent the Blue Demons into their halftime locker room with a 44-29 lead. Grant had 14 points at the break and Schulte 12.
