Track & Field Closes Saturday at Benedictine

LISLE, Ill. ââ'¬" A successful day at Benedictine Saturday for the DePaul track & field teams saw the Blue Demons win eight events, including five of a possible eight throwing events.
The first time running this season for the DePaul 4x100 relay team was a successful one as the Blue Demons finished first overall. DePaul was represented by Jessica Watkins, Alexia Harvey, Laura Edwards and Shayna Nwokenkwo in the event and finished with a time of 47.14. The Blue Demons just edged out Lewis (47.23) to take the title.
Chris Korabik and Jake Pecorin led the way in the men's 3000m run on Saturday. Korabik was the only runner to finish under the nine-minute mark and crossed the finish line at 8:53.70. Pecorin took second place by finishing with a time of 9:01.22.
Caroline Muller surpassed her outdoor collegiate-best mark in the women's high jump on Saturday and closed the event with a 1.65m jump. The sophomore jumper was tied at the top of the results with that mark and won the event after the tiebreaker.
Kyle Hedge won his first event of the outdoor season when he grabbed the top position in the men's shot put. Hedge threw a distance of 15.97 meters for the event victory. Fellow sophomore Isaac Jimenez placed fifth with a mark of 14.54 meters. Hedge followed that performance with a personal best in the discus throw of 48.02 meters to take second overall out of 32 throwers.
Emily Eller posted a mark of 14.22m in the women's shot put to take home the gold Saturday. Eller was just .12 meters off her school record in the event. Dylan Marshall earned a top-five finish after reaching 12.16 meters in the same event. Marshall later won the javelin throw with a PR attempt of 43.39 meters. Morgan Maize placed second with a toss of 35.02 meters.
Corinne Franz joined her throwing teammates by winning the women's discus throw. Franz hit a distance of 44.83 meters on her way to winning the event. The senior thrower won the event by over two meters.
Will Hauser and Andrew Rocco each made their season debuts for the Blue Demons and found their ways onto the podium for the men's javelin. Hauser was the event winner after reaching 46.25 meters on his best throw. Rocco placed third in his collegiate debut with a toss of 43.91 meters.
Rebecca Chouinard continued her stellar freshman season by cracking the 50-meter mark in the women's hammer throw, the first Blue Demon to do so this year. The freshman finished second in the event with a mark of 52.97 meters, more than three meters over her personal best.
Alex Campanella found a spot on the podium in the men's 3000m steeplechase after claiming second place. The senior closed the race with a time of 9:53.37 to beat out 14 other runners in the event.
After setting personal records in both the 800m and 1500m her last time out, Miranda Rea earned a runner-up finish in the women's 800m event. The sophomore finished with a time of 2:19.04 to set a new personal best. Senior Lauren Sharp took sixth at 2:22.57, also a personal record.
Salomon Wright set a personal best in the men's 1500m by crossing the finish line at 3:57.47. Wright placed fourth in the event with that time.
Paige Skorseth and Jessica Harris claimed spots on the podium on Saturday for the women's 3000m run. Skorseth was the runner-up in the event with a time of 10:40.91, while Harris was right behind in third at 10:57.11.
In the team standings, the women's team placed second overall with 111 points and the men took fifth with 90.50 points.
The Blue Demons travel to Long Beach, Calif. for their next meet of the outdoor season for the Beach Invitational. Hosted by Long Beach State, the two-day meet takes place on April 13 and 14.
