Golf Set for BIG EAST Championship

CHICAGO - The DePaul golf team travels to Callawassie Island, S.C. for the 2017 BIG EAST Championship that starts on Sunday, April 30. The three-day, three-round event crowns the conference champion with the Blue Demons looking to improve on last year's third-place showing.
The BIG EAST Championship takes place at Callawassie Island Club that features three nine-hole courses. The conference championship will be played on the Dogwood and Magnolia courses that totals a par-72 layout over 7,065 yards. Tee times start at 8 a.m. ET each day.
The team winner of the nine-team event will earn the BIG EAST's automatic berth into the 2017 NCAA Tournament field. Should the individual champion not be a member of the championship team, he will also earn a spot in the NCAA Championship field as an individual.
Marquette earned the top seed in the tournament, followed by Seton Hall, Georgetown and DePaul. Butler is the No. 5 seed with Villanova, St. John's, Xavier and Creighton rounding out the nine-team field.
Competing for DePaul in the BIG EAST Championship are Jonathan Hewett, James Lelliott, Freddy Thomas, Garret Buckley and Jonathan Goldstein.
Noting the Blue Demons: The Blue Demons look to continue their climb up the leaderboard as they have posted five top-ten team finishes this season, featuring 12 top-25 player finishes... senior Jonathan Hewett leads the team with a 74.15 stroke average... he is followed by junior Freddy Thomas (74.20) and senior James Lelliott (75.25)... Hewett leads the squad with two top-10 finishes, while Thomas and Lelliott have each recorded one... Hewett's three-round score of 210 at the Loyola Intercollegiate is the best 54-hole total by a Blue Demon this spring.
Kaufmann to Retire, Schiene Named Successor: DePaul golf coach Betty Kaufmann announced Friday that she is retiring following the conclusion of the 2016-17 season. Kaufmann had led the program for the last 19 seasons. Assistant coach Marty Schiene will take over the program following Kaufmann's departure as head coach.
Hewett and Thomas Pick Up All-Conference Honors: Jonathan Hewett and Freddy Thomas were recognized on Friday as they were named to the All-BIG EAST teams. Hewett was a first team selection in a vote by the head coaches and Thomas was a second team selection. A year ago, Thomas was a first team pick and Hewett was named to the second team.
DePaul in the BIG EAST Championship: DePaul's best BIG EAST finish was a second-place showing in 2015... the Blue Demons have finished third (2016), second (2015), third (2014), fifth (2007), sixth (2013), seventh (2011, 2009, 2008), eighth (2006) and 10th (2012)... Freddy Thomas captured DePaul's top finish the past two seasons with a tie for fifth-place in 2016 and a tie for third-place in 2015... Greg Doherty holds DePaul's best BIG EAST Championship score with a tournament total of 214 (-2) in 2007... Doherty finished in a tie for eighth in 2007... Maximilian Mayer and Ben Westley each finished in the top 10 in 2011... it marked the first time two DePaul golfers finished in the top 10 at the BIG EAST Championship... Mayer was eighth and Westley ended in a tie for 10th... seven DePaul golfers have finished in the top 10 with Doherty (2007), Furci (2010), Mayer (2011), Westley (2011), John Pavelko (2013), Jonathan Hewett (2014) and Freddy Thomas (2015, 2016).
