CHICAGO - The Blue Demons added another win to their 2018 campaign in a 1-0 tilt against Villanova on Sunday afternoon at Wish Field. DePaul improved to 7-6-4, 3-3-2 BIG EAST while Villanova fell to 9-8-0, 3-5-0 BIG EAST.
Prior to first touch of the 2018 home finale at Wish Field, DePaul celebrated its five graduating seniors -- Franny Cerny, Madeline Frick, Chelsey Henry, Vanessa Nigg and Elizabeth Parrilli.
How it Happened
The Blue Demons came out with an intensity unmatched by the Wildcats and the will to win on Senior Day. They outshot 'Nova 13-8 with seven of the 13 being on goal. The Wildcats failed to put up a single shot on goal. DePaul also won the corners battle 12-2.
DePaul's offensive onslaught was evident as they put up 12 of their 13 shots and earned eight of their corners in the first half. The lone goal of the match came in the final minute of the first half. Franny Cerny held off a defender towards the right side of the box before tapping it to Jade Eriksen-Russo who sent it flying to the left corner of the net for the go-ahead goal. The game-winner was her first and also marked her second career goal.
Despite the chippy game that saw two yellow cards apiece, the Blue Demons were able to hold off Villanova to take the win that keeps them in playoff contention going into their final conference matchup against St. John's.
Mollie Eriksson was not forced to make a single save against the Wildcats for her seventh shutout of the season - second consecutive - good enough to be tied for third in the BIG EAST. Her goals against average of 0.91 and her save percentage of 0.787 places her fifth in the BIG EAST.
